How To Edit AcroForms In A PDF Online For Free

Background
AcroForms are the interactive form fields built into the PDF format. When you open a PDF that has fillable fields, those fields are AcroForm elements. They allow a reader to enter text, make selections, and tick checkboxes directly in a PDF viewer without printing the document first. AcroForms have been part of the PDF specification since 1996 and remain the most widely supported way to create fillable PDFs.
The most common AcroForm field types you will encounter are radio buttons, checkboxes, text fields, and dropdowns. Each type serves a different purpose in a form, and all of them can be added and edited using the Edit PDF tool directly in your browser.

AcroForm field types
Checkbox
A checkbox is a square toggle that can be independently checked or unchecked. Unlike radio buttons, checkboxes are not linked to each other, so a reader can check any combination of them. This makes checkboxes the right choice for agreement statements, feature selections, lists of preferences, or any situation where more than one option can apply at the same time.
A checkbox has a checked state and an unchecked state. The default state is usually unchecked, but you can set it to checked by default when configuring the field.
Radio button
A radio button is a circular selection control used when a reader must choose exactly one option from a group. Radio buttons in a group are linked together by a shared field name, so selecting one automatically deselects the others. This makes them the right choice for questions like selecting a plan tier, choosing a gender on a medical form, or picking a payment method.
Each individual radio button has its own export value, which is the data value written to the PDF when that option is selected. You set the group name and export value when configuring the field, and the reader simply clicks to make their selection.
Dropdown
A dropdown (also called a combo box or choice field) presents a collapsed list of options that expands when a reader clicks on it. The reader picks one item from the list and the field displays their selection. Dropdowns are ideal when you have a defined set of choices, such as a list of countries, states, product categories, or date formats, and you want to keep the form compact.
You define the list of options when configuring the field. Each option has a display label that the reader sees and an export value that is stored in the PDF data when that option is chosen.
Text field
A text field is a rectangular input area where a reader can type freeform content. It is the most flexible AcroForm field type and is used for first and last names, addresses, email addresses, phone numbers, dates, comments, and any other information that does not fit a fixed set of choices.
Text fields can be configured to be single-line or multi-line. A single-line field is best for short values like a name or a date, while a multi-line field gives the reader room to write a longer response such as a description or a message.
Edit tool
The Edit PDF tool is where you add and edit all of the AcroForm field types above. Open your PDF and use the toolbar's AcroForm dropdown to select the field type you want to add. Click and drag on the page to draw the field area, then configure its properties, such as the field name, default value, and options, from the right-side inspector panel.
To edit an existing field, click on it to select it. The inspector panel will load its current configuration and let you update any property. You can reposition the field by dragging it, resize it with the handles, or delete it using the delete action button or the Delete key. Changes are applied immediately and reflected when you preview or download the finished PDF.
Everything runs locally in your browser. Your PDF is never uploaded to any server, no account is required, and no watermark is added to your file.
Tips
- Radio button groups: All radio buttons in the same group must share the same field name. Give each button a unique export value so the selected option can be identified when the form data is read.
- Field names matter: If you are creating a form that will be processed programmatically, use consistent and descriptive field names. Renaming fields after the fact is possible but requires updating every reference.
- Multi-line text fields: If you expect a longer response, use a multi-line text field and make the field area tall enough to display several lines of text comfortably without scrolling.
- Layer: Since acroforms sit on top of the page content, they will always be visible and cannot be accidentally hidden behind other elements.
- Password-protected PDF? You will need the document password to open and edit it. The editor will prompt you when you upload the file.
